ABOUT THE INITIATIVE

Film Reel

In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement of 2020, three industry veterans (Sanaz Lavaedian of Mocean, Emily Roman of Bank Robber and Sharon Jennings of BAM Music) combined forces to break down barriers by creating this matchmaking platform to connect black artists, songwriters, composers and producers to sync reps.

WHY?

WHAT IS SYNC?

Sync (or synchronization) is a process where music is combined with moving images – film, TV, ads, video games, trailers, digital videos, etc. Sync deals are usually arranged between a music publisher and a prospective content maker for any of the production types or more listed above.

WHAT IS MUSIC PUBLISHING?

Music publishing is the management of copyrighted music that gets used commercially. A publisher is responsible for things like the collection of royalties, the public use of music made by the artists, composers, songwriters and producers they represent, and finding licensing opportunities.

WHAT IS MUSIC LICENSING?

Music licensing is the licensed use of copyrighted music through an agreement with specific terms. Music licensing is intended to ensure that the owners of copyrights on musical works are compensated for certain uses, in our case sync uses, of their work.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Black Music Makers who are creating content specially with sync in mind or would work well for sync. Any individual or team of songwriters, composers, musicians, vocalists and/or producers who understands how to develop music for the moving image. While we are looking for songs as well as instrumental music of all genres, these submissions are solely for sync -- not for a commercial label or publishing deal.
